Transport

Steep reductions in carbon emissions from transport are needed over the next decade. Photo: © CPRE
We promote positive travel solutions, whether better conditions for people walking and cycling or innovative ways to provide public transport in rural areas. We believe that:
- People should not have to travel further every year to meet their basic needs: transport planning needs to be joined up with the way land is used and services delivered.
- Carbon emissions from transport are rising faster than any other sector. Transport, particularly aviation, should contribute its fair share to efforts to reduce emissions.
- Improving transport in rural areas is important. This is not just for the fifth of the population who live in the countryside, but also to make it easier for everyone else to access the natural environment.
Flying to distraction
Airport expansion scars the landscape, while increased flights shatter tranquillity and threatens jobs in rural areas that depend on domestic tourism. The special treatment given to flying will make it even harder for carbon reduction targets to be met.

You can’t build your way out of congestion
Building more roads and Park & Rides is generating ever more motor traffic. Car dependency is being increased, while the viability of local shops, services and public transport in rural areas is being damaged.

On the right track
Rail travel is booming but investment seems to favour generating new long distance commuting, rather than giving more people an affordable opportunity to take to trains. We want stations and lines to be reopened to make rail an option for more people and more freight.

A car dependent countryside?
Rural public transport is facing cuts, while rising traffic levels make walking and cycling on rural roads ever less pleasant. Forests of traffic signs are sprouting up, while fewer people are getting out and about in the countryside.

Running to stand still?
The way in which we plan the use of land has a huge impact on how and how much we need to travel. Different types of transport need to be joined up, as the more we can mix and match, the better the alternative to driving. Improving Local Transport Plans is key to achieving this at the local level.
