Local heroes update

So far over 25 local planning authorities have endorsed our campaign. Here is what some of them have said to us.

North Hertfordshire District Council
It has been an objective, since January 2005, for our two Compliance Officers, as part of their workload, to survey and take action regarding unauthorised signs in the rural area... so far they have negotiated the removal of two signs adjacent to the A1(M) and two along the A505.

Richmondshire District Council, North Yorkshire
In recent months it was noted that an increase in signs had taken place alongside the A1 and... (three) signs were removed from fields...

All signs were removed through negotiation and no formal action was necessary in these particular instances. The threat of prosecution action can make landowners remove the signs. The publicity of a court case which would in effect name and shame often makes the large companies remove the signs as my letters are directed at the chairpersons of the companies.

South Kesteven District Council, Lincolnshire
By ignoring our advice about an advertising sign, the OK Diner near South Witham on the A1 southbound took away a fine and legal costs of £1,150... South Kesteven District Council is calling on anyone who wants outdoor adverts to check with the council before spending money that could be wasted.

South Staffordshire District Council
I am pleased that this scourge is now been acted upon and that the practice that we here in South Staffs have been using for many years is being acknowledged as good practice. I have long been encouraging my colleagues in other authorities to be more proactive in dealing with this problem which in actuality is very easy to deal with...

I fully endorse the actions of CPRE and your "heroes" — it looks as if we could have been one too!

Unauthorised roadside advertising is also an urban issue

Blackpool Council, Lancashire

... There are numerous examples along the M55, which is the motorway approach to our town.

We have raised our concerns about these adverts with our neighbour authorities and have offered our assistance in prosecuting those responsible and getting the signs removed. Blackpool Council's concern is that, whilst the signs are outside our town, their impact is detrimental not only to the appearance of the countryside but also to the first impression gained of our town on its main approach.

Westminster City Council
Our policies are fundamentally opposed to unauthorised advertising which has a similar effect in an urban context... without robust and consistent enforcement action the face of Westminster and the centre of London's World City would be very different from what it is today.
